I'm Greg Aubry. I am a long-time anime and comics fan, currently enrolled in a graphic design program at the trade school Specs Howard in suburban Detroit, Michigan. I've been drawing (poorly) for as long as I can remember, imitating the comics and cartoons and other zany things that captured my attention throughout my (fairly uneventful) childhood. I have a "some college" educational background that primarily consists of inconsistent enrollment in various liberal arts classes at the local community college (high school with ashtrays and day care). My favorite period, far and away, was live figure drawing. Alas, I've found that I've completely deteriorated in my ability to draw the figure as I've let that time get further and further away from me.
These days, I'm very much enjoying the hardware/software combination of the 24" iMac, Wacom Intuos3 9x12" tablet, and the Adobe CS3 package. Illustrator and Flash have fast become my favorite programs of the bundle, and I've starting using the whole suite to take on freelance graphic design projects.
I have two primary comics properties that I've wasted far, far too much acting tentative on, rather than putting them out there and seeing what happens. It's like I'm waiting for something, but I'm not entirely certain what.
I enjoy good, workmanlike comics creators that can tell a story without a lot of copy cluttering up their pages. Guys like Craig Thompson, Mike Mignola, Jeff Smith, Erik Larsen, Adam Warren, Frank Miller, Kenichi Sonoda... the list goes on and on. If I could concoct a style that blends all the best of those guys (can I have a bit of Paul Pope, too?), I'd be in good shape.
I play a lot of live music as well, primarily electric and bass guitar with vocals. I'm not currently in a band, as I elected to drop out of Dead Letters, the Detroit-area garage/punk/blues band I'd been in since late 2006 to concentrate on finishing school and finding a new job. Of course, a few weeks after you quit playing, you get that bug back in your system, so now I'm going a bit nuts.
What can you do?
Just keep working.
That's my plan.
Take care, and I'll do the same.
